THE TREBUCHET

The trebuchet was imported from China which some people believe that they used a form of the trebuchet since 300 BC.  During the IslamicAnimated picture of a trebuchet conquest from 624 AD and up, the trebuchet  was seen in the East Mediterranean.  Most likely the crusaders in the 12th century were responsible for the introduction of the trebuchet to Western Europe.

There were two types of trebuchets.  One was the traction trebuchet that used man power to haul down the shorter end of the beam which flipped up the longer end with a sling attached.  As the longer end reached its apex, the sling opened releasing a large stone or other objects.  The traction trebuchet was good for throwing incendiaries and heads.  The second type was the counterpoise trebuchet which had a weight on the short end.
